Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a term is often used interchangeably with corporate conscience, corporate citizenship, social performance or sustainable responsible business. CSR is a form of corporate personality directive incorporated into a business model that ensures active compliance with the spirit of law, ethical standards, and international norms.
The objective of CSR is to embrace accountability for the company’s actions and encourage an affirmative impact through its activities on the environment, consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and other members of the public sphere.
Organisations taking CSR seriously would proactively promote the public interest by encouraging community growth and development. CSR activities would voluntarily take measures to eliminate practices that harm the public. It is the conscious inclusion of public interest into corporate decision making. CSR is a name given to the actions taken by enterprises that would aid their mission as well as be a guide to what the company stands for and the values it has and upholds to its customers.
An office is a place where a number of people regularly meet and exchange ideas, at least five days of the week which incidentally also makes an office the perfect place where societal alertness can be created. Companies should take initiatives to engage employees in some socially useful and productive work and create a work culture where CSR activities are actively held.
Keep a specific day in every month or once in every couple of months when employees would plant trees in the office compound. They may also name the trees after themselves so that they feel attached to them. Allow them to take care of the trees and water them regularly. Let them dedicate a few minutes from their office time to the trees. This would help create awareness about environment. Urge them to spread the awareness at home as well.
On every World Aids Day, which is annually celebrated on December 1, ask your employees to wear the red ribbons. On June 5 every year, create awareness about environmental issues amongst your employees as it is the World Environment Day.
On Womens’ Day, which is celebrated on March 8 every year, arrange for a small felicitation ceremony for the best women performers of the year. The management can also take this opportunity to raise awareness about various issues related to women. The constantly declining sex ratio in India has been a reason for great concern, you can form social awareness about such issues. The company can also dig into its Employee Recognition Ideas well and acknowledge and appreciate the work done by its women employees.
Keep your employees informed about what is happening around them in the world. Whenever there is something important happening in the world, post reports on the intranet. Also provide links to some good articles which would help your employees know, learn and grow.
Organisations can also donate certain parts of their profits for charity. Arrange for a day when your employees can go to an old age home or orphanage and distribute food and clothes among the inmates. This would be a very fulfilling experience for your employees, and as a corporate, your organisation would also be able to perform the important social responsibilities.
Along with financial results, focus on non-economic areas such as human rights, business ethics, environmental policies, corporate contributions, community development and workplace issues. Some simple examples of Corporate Social Responsibility could be arranging for safe working conditions for employees, creating environmental awareness and providing assistance to community groups and charities.
Sustainability was not a common reason for anxiety among companies until very recently. In an era of globalisation, multinational companies and even local businesses should no longer carry out unethical and destructive practices which pollute the environment. The media is more alert now and with growing pressure from non-governmental organisations, there is a swelling demand from civil society, consumers and government, for corporations to conduct sustainable business practices.
If you are looking for in performing CSR, you would find more than one. One of the main benefits is that it will help your employees become better individuals and good employees eventually help build a successful company. Every individual has a humane side, looking out for an opportunity to serve others and trying to find enough time to do so from their busy schedules. Give your employees that opportunity and the world will be a better place to live in, and so will be your company.
