We often think (and overthink!) about our work but ever think about happiness at work? Picture this. You’re chatting with a friend and in the middle of the conversation you get asked, “So, how’s it going at work? Are you happy?”
Instant flashbacks to life as you’ve known it lately, and you see yourself getting up in the morning, grooming yourself and dressing up to head off to the place you call “work”. How does that make you feel? What do you feel like saying to this friend who’s still staring, seemingly into your soul, still waiting for a response?
It is commonly shared wisdom that happiness does not reside in our possessions, but instead in our time as it passes by. Well, as a working professional, we realise that a great deal of our day is spent at our workplace (and if you’re like most of us, work invariably gets carried over to our homes as well). It would be safe to assume, then, that the happiness of an individual is deeply tied with how happy their work makes them. What contributes to happiness at the workplace or employee happiness are factors like employee engagement, fun employee activities, great work culture and accepting employee ideas. One of the best ways organizations can achieve this is by sending out happiness at work surveys to their employees and then attempt to make employee engagement more attainable and efficient.
The thing is, as life goes by and routines set in, it seems easier to just do rather than reflect on how one feels. As the day ends, all that remains is the residual taste of the day gone by. Well, if you find that you do not in fact like this taste, maybe it is time to reconsider the impact that your work-life has on you.
For instance, spare a moment to think about whether you have a drive in your life that makes you super excited about going to work. Warren Buffet once said, “There comes a time when you ought to start doing what you want. Take a job that you love. You will jump out of bed in the morning.” Is that how you start your working day? Take a pause to think about what inspires you, what motivates you and what your priorities and interests are.
When these priorities and interests are understood and taken care of by not just you but your workplace as well, it results in the perfect recipe for happiness at work. Speaking of priorities, it is crucial that you manage to find the right amount of work-life blend and do not wallow in the feeling of having to give up too much of your personal life to your work. When it comes to interests, it is of the utmost importance that your interests in life are aligned with those of your company’s and that in turn, your work is helping you learn the necessary skills and achieve your long-desired goals. After all, no one likes a one-way street in relationships. Your work-life is no different.
So, do snap out of your flashback reverie and find that you too can figure out if you truly find happiness at work. After all, it is not just the friend who waits on you for an answer. It’s your life that awaits too.
